We’ve all heard of Shiny Object Syndrome – that irresistible pull toward the next new thing that promises to change everything. But there’s a sneakier, more pervasive culprit sabotaging many women in their 50s as they reinvent their lives and careers: Broken Focus Syndrome.

Unlike Shiny Object Syndrome, which thrives on novelty, Broken Focus Syndrome is about distraction fatigue – the chronic inability to stay anchored to what truly matters because life, noise and constant stimulation keep pulling us apart at the seams.  And who knows, maybe social media has caused this, maybe it hasn’t but we can all agree that we live in times where we are all bombarded by constant media both on and offline.

What Is Broken Focus Syndrome?

Broken Focus Syndrome isn’t a medical diagnosis (yet!), but it’s very real. It’s the experience of wanting to move forward – of knowing what you want and what you have to do – but feeling like your mental bandwidth is constantly hijacked.  Guilty as charged.

It’s that scattered, stop-start energy where you begin the day with clear intentions … and end it wondering where the time went.

It’s not laziness, lack of ambition or poor discipline. It’s the side effect of living in a hyperconnected, over-stimulated world that thrives on interruption.

Does any of these sound familiar:

  • Difficulty refocusing: After an interruption, it can take a long time to return to the previous task.
  • Mind-wandering: Frequent daydreaming or “spacing out” when trying to pay attention.
  • Mental fogginess: A lack of mental clarity and difficulty thinking clearly.
  • Inconsistent performance: Productivity suffers and tasks may take longer to complete.

It can drive one to feel as though a medical diagnosis is needed at times!

The Underlying Causes

  1. Information Overload
We live in an era where everyone has an opinion, a method, a “must-try” strategy. We scroll for inspiration, but end up with comparison, confusion and mental clutter. Too many inputs, not enough integration and follow through.
  2. Perfectionism in Disguise
Many high-achieving women struggle to stay focused because deep down, focus equals commitment. And commitment means we can’t hide behind “just researching” or “still preparing.” So we unconsciously keep ourselves busy – but not productive.  And yet we are so focussed on outcomes and results – go figure!
  3. Emotional Fragmentation
Transitioning from corporate to entrepreneurship (or any major life reinvention) often stirs up self-doubt, grief and identity shifts. When emotions aren’t processed, they leak into our focus, leaving us scattered and self-critical.
  4. Cultural Conditioning
Women have been conditioned to multitask, manage and make it all look effortless and stylish. But multitasking is the enemy of mastery. We’ve been rewarded for bums in seats busyness, not focus – and it’s time to rewrite that script.
  5. Lifestyle factors: Overwork, stress, sleep deprivation or poor diet can also contribute.
  6. Medical conditions: Conditions like ADHA, anxiety or other medical issues can cause or worsen focus issues.
  7. Addictions: Addiction to things like the internet or social media can make it challenging to focus on other things (especially if you have a teenager in the house!)
  8. Physiological issues: Inflammation and hormonal changes can impact your ability to concentrate.

Phew!  That’s a lot to consider …

Why It’s So Prevalent Today

Broken Focus Syndrome thrives in the age of pings, notifications and endless “urgent” distractions. Our nervous systems were never designed to process this much noise.

Add in the self imposed pressure to “reinvent” yourself at midlife – plus social media feeds glamorizing everyone else’s supposed ‘perfect’ lifestyle and progress – and it’s no wonder focus feels fractured and we feel as though we are constantly in catch up.

We’re being asked to build a new chapter while standing in the middle of a hurricane of stimulation.

How to Overcome It

1. Protect Your Energy Like a CEO
Focus is an energy and an intention game, not a time-management one. Start your day with clarity on your top 3 priorities – then guard them fiercely. No phone, no Facebook, no rabbit holes until they’re done.

2. Choose Depth Over Breadth
Pick one thing and go all in. Depth creates results; dabbling creates burnout. Especially if you’re working to excel in several things.  Every “yes” to distraction is a “no” to your destiny.

3. Create White Space
Schedule time where you’re not consuming or producing or creating – just be. Walk, meditate, journal.  Spend time in silence. White space restores clarity and intuition, your two most valuable entrepreneurial – and indeed life – tools.

4. Build Your Focus Muscle
Focus is like a muscle – it strengthens with use. Set a timer for 25 minutes and give one task your full, undivided attention. You’ll be shocked at how much you can accomplish when you’re all in and racing the clock.

5. Reconnect With Your Why
Broken focus often signals disconnection from purpose and your why. When you reconnect with your goals – your deeper “soul self” – focus naturally follows. Purpose cuts through noise like a laser.  Particularly when there is a deadline.

6. Reduce distractions: Turn off unnecessary notifications and work in a quiet environment.  Whilst the local café might look good on Instagram, it’s not really conducive to strong focus.

7. Practice mindfulness: Techniques like deep breathing can assist in reducing anxiety and improve attention.

8. Improve habits: Ensure you are getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, drinking enough clean water, resting and recovering well and managing stress.

9. Consult a professional: If your difficulties are persistent and significantly impact your life, consider speaking with a healthcare provider to rule out an underlying medical condition.  They will see your blindspots.

Final Thoughts

Broken Focus Syndrome isn’t a flaw – it’s a symptom of a world that profits from our distraction.

But you, my lovely, are not here to live distracted. You’re here to live directed.

Reinvention requires intention, devotion and unapologetic focus and drive on what sets your soul on fire.  Because when your focus heals, your future unfolds.
